In a recent speech by Michael Tanner of the Cato Institute, it was clear that the corporate oligarchy isn't ready to build a broadbased economy in the United States.
Mr. Tanner maintains that outsourcing is good for America.
"Outsourcing jobs has allowed U.S. companies to penetrate foreign markets, be more competitive and hire more U.S. workers at home," states Mr. Tanner.
Mr. Tanner goes on to say "If we're going to sell cars in China, it makes sense to build a plant in China."
In Mr. Tanner's world, we export jobs, not cars.
Here is Tanner's idea of the bright side of outsourcing: 'Overseas profits are brought back to the United States "and then those new profits enable them to hire new and more skilled jobs in this country."
Mr. Tanner doesn't get very specific about what these jobs will be or where they will be found. But we can be sure that trickle-down employment, like trickle-down wealth, will never reach the millions of Americans who need work.

Linc,
ReplyDeleteWe need to find people of influence who can present bottom-up economic theories in a way that the everyday person will understand, and once understood, demand that our elected leaders embrace this notion as good for America. Unfortunately, trickle down economic theories still dominate the airwaves, as they are wrapped in the American ideal of upward mobility and financial independence.
"People of indluence" don't believe in bottom-up theories. Some very bright people of little influence do (Joseph Stiglitz, Ralph Nader, Wendell Berry, Morris Berman, Chris Hedges, etc.) They will never achieve power. Two writers from your area, Donald L. Bartlett and James B. Steele covered all this 20 years ago in their book: "America:what went wrong." Nothing changed.
ReplyDeleteNow they have a second book. Haven't read it but I'm sure it won't change anything either.
Senate leaders state the we have the best health care system in the world. They must know that the US is 50th in infant mortality rate. Are they lying or are they stupid? Does it matter?
